ARTIST’S STATEMENT:Sophia Kyriakou

In the last few years, Sophia Kyriakou deals with practices related to the environment, creates projects, actions and educational programs based on the observation of phenomena related to the impact that humans have on the environment. In her last solo exhibition entitled Asaroton, she presented a series of works which used the Asaroton mosaic created in Rome in the 2nd century BC and showing the remains of a Symposium, as a starting point. In all of Kyriakos’s works we can see similarities with the Roman mosaic, mainly of the depictions of the fragments of modern society, which converse with natural debris and are part of the compositions of her works. The process of their depiction is the subject of an observational study because she collects natural and artificial fragments from public places and beaches (small plastic pieces, parts of shells, wood, etc.) that are the observable materials of the painting space, which she composes on a well-prepared surface from petroleum waste liquids. In this way she activates the surface to accept the compositions of its designs, depicting natural and artificial objects. The fragmentation of the parts is a narrative and creates a text that activates the unifying power of nature. Along with her wall works, she creates small-sculptural compositions which she calls islands or Storytellers Islands with pieces that she has in her collection of found fragments. Giving through these works the opportunity of narrating the sincerity of the material, which narrates the history of contemporary reality.
