OPEN CALL:Applications for 2028 Residency at Jan van Eyck Academie
The Jan van Eyck is open to candidates from a wide array of disciplines and approaches, ranging from material-based to research-driven practices, addressing both urgent global issues and more personal inquiries. Selected Jan van Eyck participants share an inquisitive and considerate attitude toward the other and the world, their work testifies to an art practice that is investigative and committed.
Artists, curators, designers, writers, architects and other artistic researchers are invited to apply for an 11-month residency amongst a cohort of some 36 participants. Each selected participant receives the time and space to expand their artistic practice with the expert support of our advisers, the curator/resident liaison, the departments of Nature Research and Education & Development, as well as the library and the Jan van Eyck labs – Photography & Audiovisual, Material Matters, Food, Printing & Publishing, and Future Materials.
Participants not only follow their individual trajectories but also develop themselves in relation to their peers. During the residency, they share their stories, curiosities, practices, have an opportunity to learn from and support each other, collaborate, and experiment across disciplines. Furthermore, participants can get actively involved in institutional (public) programmes where speculative concepts are tested and the pressing socio-environmental challenges of today are debated.
Every year, the Jan van Eyck commits to fostering a broad, diverse coalition of participants, advisers, and collaborative partners – a framework that embraces a diversity of practices and allows for a multitude of voices.

Tips and Notes
- Preferably, arrange your PDF in a landscape format, unless the original work requires a portrait format;
- Make sure you only insert one or two works per page as combining too many works makes the page illegible;
- Add clear captions to your images, such as titles, material, size, year. You may also include a short description of the work and a link to further documentation or a video;
- For large files (like videos), please insert a link to the online platform (server/website/YouTube/Vimeo) where the file can be viewed;
- For Vimeo: please make sure your videos are rated. A video without a rating prompts the viewer to log in to Vimeo, making it harder to access your work as not all jury members have a Vimeo account.
- Please make sure that all hyperlinks are working and that all passwords are provided for the jury to access the relevant material online for at least three months after the submission deadline;
- If you are applying as a duo or a collective, you need to submit only one application and pay the application fee once. The person submitting the application will become the main contact person for the academy.
Selection Procedure
Your application will be assessed by a selection committee composed of the Jan van Eyck director as well as five other external art professionals coming from various fields of expertise. When reviewing applications, the jury pays attention to the following:
- Motivation for taking on a residency period at the Jan van Eyck at this point in the applicant’s artistic trajectory;
- Urgency, purpose, and the aim of the project proposal;
- The applicant’s ability to exercise critical thought, their approach to (self)reflection, and the positioning of their practice in relation to others and to the world.
The selection committee takes into consideration several factors in relation to the final selection, such as a balance in disciplines, geography, and gender.
After Selections
The selection outcome will be communicated mid-May 2027. Unfortunately, due to the large number of applications we receive each year, we are unable to provide personalised feedback on unsuccessful applications.
If selected, you will be asked to sign the Jan van Eyck Code of Conduct and an agreement with the Jan van Eyck Academie. This agreement and the code state all details concerning your stay, working period, the policies of the institute, mutual rights and duties, and the approach we expect from participants and staff.
If you foresee any difficulties starting your residency, be it because of personal circumstances, health issues, your financial situation, psychological or physical challenges, or visa related concerns, please get in touch with us as soon as possible and we will do our best to assist.
