PRESENTATION:Isaac Chong Wai-An Intimate Surrender
Isaac Chong Wai uses installation, performance, video, photography, and drawing to explore social phenomena through the lens of the body, time and the traces they bear. His work transforms the emotions, tensions, and memories from human interactions into performative materiality. Treading the line between the individual and the collective, Chong examines the vulnerability and resilience of the body within social systems, reimagining alternative microcosms of human relations built on mutual support and understanding.

Isaac Chong Wai presents “An Intimate Surrender,” his first solo live art exhibition in Hong Kong, taking the celebrated Chinese novel and film “Farewell My Concubine” as a point of departure to explore gender performance, memory, and queer subjectivity both on and off the stage. Spanning four weeks across two main galleries, the exhibition creates a complex, immersive architectural terrain where bodies, images, and spatial arrangements converge to examine how cultural identities are inherited, performed, and reconfigured across time.
In the main exhibition space, a monumental, living installation crafted from metal frameworks, etched glass, mirrors, and colored panels forms a fragmented, cinematic landscape through which performers and audiences move together. Drawing from film stills and the intricate, vulnerable trajectory of the protagonist Cheng Dieyi, Chong Wai utilizes body imprints etched onto glass surfaces as a primary image-making material. These traces map out shadows of memory that are at once deeply intimate yet inherently incomplete, reflecting how cinematic images become embedded within us not merely as visual recollections, but as embodied experiences that shape our desires and self-understanding.
During live activations, performers execute repeated sequences of Peking Opera gestures and scenes from the film, carefully aligning their physical selves with the glass imprints to navigate moments of shared somatic connection and lingering difference. Through feminine movement vocabularies like the orchid hand gesture, the work unpacks gender as a performed construct, weaving together aligned heads, gestures of surrender, and interrupted cycles of falling and spinning that echo repeated scenes of death and devotion in the film. Integrated mirrors reflect both the performers and the shifting presence of the visitors, entangling everyone within a single field of images and blurring the boundaries between onstage illusion and real-time presence to generate constantly evolving, ephemeral spatial landscapes.
The second gallery transitions into a dimly lit blue room evoking a backstage rehearsal site framed by semi-transparent silk drapes and mirrored surfaces. In his “Staged” series, the artist dismantles traditional Peking Opera phoenix coronets—rearranging hairpins (touzan), side-flaps (liezipian), and decorative baubles (paozi) across mirrored surfaces into abstract motifs of phoenix eyes and orchid-finger gestures, entombing them as if inside a metaphorical jewelry box. This setting hints at the institutional discipline and collective expectations inherent to traditional Chinese opera, framing the space as a site where identities are continuously masked, revised, staged, and undone.
Within this rehearsal environment, durational interventions unfold as tender touches, embraces, and shared gazes that translate internalized collective conditioning into acts of profound vulnerability. Performers lean toward one another until foreheads meet through suspended fabric, leaving residual traces of makeup on its surface and elevating the act of rehearsal itself—a process rooted in repetition, instability, and non-linearity—into an art form in its own right. By operating within the liminal threshold where preparation and presentation alternate, Chong Wai awakens sealed somatic memories, challenging conventional notions of performance and presence while opening up a tender, transformative space where identity shifts through persistent practice and traditional boundaries of gender performativity are profoundly reshaped.
