REVIEW: Sheila Hicks-Le Fil voyageur at Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac
The solo exhibition of Sheila Hicks titled “Le Fil voyageur” at the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac is being held on the occasion of the expanded reissue of the book “Le Fil voyageur”, whose original edition is now out of print. This publication was the first work in French devoted to Sheila Hicks, preceding her international recognition. The text, written by Monique Lévi-Strauss after her meeting with Sheila Hicks in the late 1960s, bears witness to a friendship and a shared passion for textiles and thread. It is a small yet carefully curated exhibition featuring works by the internationally acclaimed artist from her travels around the world, which enter into dialogue with the collection of the Ethnological Museum of Paris. These are not spectacular, flashy, or monumental works, but small, modest, and deeply powerful pieces that encompass the entire history of thread, unfolding it through Hicks’s virtuosity and the ingenuity that only the French know how to create in their museums.-Efi Michalarou
