OPEN CALL: Seeking professor for Fine Art/Foundation Course at Braunschweig University of Art

The Institute of Fine Art (IFK) at University of Art Braunschweig (HBK Braunschweig) wishes to appoint a university professor for Fine Art/Foundation Course (salary group W2) from October 1, 2026.
The successful applicant will be appointed as a civil servant in accordance with German civil service regulations, if applicable, or otherwise as an employee, for a fixed term of five years.

University of Art Braunschweig is an internationally orientated university specialising in the arts, and has the right to confer doctoral and “Habilitation” (professorial) degrees. With around 1,000 students enrolled in faculties including Fine Art, Art Pedagogy, Performing Arts, Design, Visual Communication, Art History and Aesthetics and Media Studies, HBK Braunschweig is one of the biggest universities of the arts in Germany. Our state-of-the art workshops and laboratories offer optimal conditions for thinking, working and studying.

We are looking for an outstanding artist with comprehensive experience in a variety of artistic practices, especially in the fields of drawing and graphics. The appointed person will be expected to teach foundation-stage (Grundstudium) students enrolled in the degree programmes Fine Art and Art Education, introducing them to the diverse possibilities of artistic work and guiding them in their first practical artistic projects.

Responsibilities
–Accompanying and mentoring students towards artistic independence and equipping them with the means to reflect on their own practice within the context of artistic possibilities;
–Providing a comprehensive overview of the contemporary art world;
–Participating in the artistic admission procedures and counselling for applicants
–Participating in the ongoing development of the artistic admission process at HBK Braunschweig.

As the position is defined as an “artistic professorship” (künstlerische Professur), the appointee will be expected to focus their research activities on the development of their own artistic practice. A studio is available for this purpose. In addition, the appointee is expected to contribute to raising the profile of the Fine Art at the HBK Braunschweig through their active engagement with current artistic discourse, and through solo and group exhibitions of their work, catalogues, talks, symposia, etc.
