Alicja Kwade’s work delves into the fundamental structures that underpin our reality and societal constructs, engaging deeply with themes of perception, temporality, and the fluid boundaries of truth. Her multidisciplinary practice—rooted in the conceptual intersections of time, space, science, and philosophy—manifests through a wide array of mediums, including sculptural objects, immersive large-scale installations, video, and photography. With a poetic yet rigorous approach, Kwade challenges conventional modes of understanding and invites viewers to reconsider the frameworks through which we experience and interpret the world around us.

Alicja Kwade’s distinctive artistic language is rooted in reflection, repetition, and the poetic transformation of everyday objects and natural materials. Through processes of deconstruction and reconstruction, she interrogates the very fabric of reality and probes the structures—both social and philosophical—that underpin human existence. Her work often skirts the edge of the absurd, destabilizing conventional assumptions and reshaping them into open-ended, metaphysical questions. With a mesmerizing aesthetic sensibility, Kwade crafts experiences that disrupt familiar systems of knowledge and perception, inviting viewers to contemplate alternative ways of understanding the world. Her solo exhibition, “Silent Archibionts”, centers on a singular, monumental sculpture: “Archibiont” (2025). This large-scale work unfolds as a dynamic transformation—beginning with a stark, black powder-coated steel framework that gradually morphs into organic, evocative forms. Smooth steel evolves into richly textured surfaces resembling verdigris-laced tree bark and branching animal antlers, all meticulously cast in bronze. The result is a striking interplay between artificial precision and natural growth, evoking both structure and metamorphosis. Throughout her practice, Kwade explores the shared logics that govern disciplines like science, mathematics, and philosophy. Her work is grounded in the constant shifting of perspectives, as she challenges established truths and invents a visual language steeped in both celestial geometry and terrestrial materiality. This approach foregrounds the human impulse to define, measure, and make sense of existence—even as the universe remains an enigmatic and evolving frontier. In Kwade’s vision, art becomes a conduit for this inquiry, operating alongside science as a tool for navigating the unknowable. “Archibiont”, Kwade’s new major work, draws from a wide array of references—architecture, biology, cosmology, and metaphysics—coalescing into a singular form that embodies transformation. Central to the sculpture is Aristotle’s doctrine of hylomorphism, which posits that all things are composites of matter and form, and that existence arises through their union. Kwade’s installation inhabits this philosophical terrain, capturing a moment of metamorphosis that is both temporal and timeless. The use of bronze, a historically resonant and enduring material, preserves ephemeral natural elements in a state of suspended evolution—frozen, yet teeming with latent vitality. The tension between permanence and change, order and entropy, echoes throughout “Archibiont”. These contradictions mirror the cosmic and earthly systems Kwade seeks to interpret: structures of logic and beauty held in constant flux, forever shaped by the invisible forces that govern both the natural world and the human quest to understand it.
