OPEN CALL: Hypha Studios x recessed.space call for exhibitions at No.1 Poultry

Hypha Studios are looking for artists, curators, and architects to mount exhibitions in the iconic Postmodern masterpiece, No.1 Poultry, London, designed by James Stirling. The building will host a year of exhibitions within three new gallery spaces, programmed following a free-to-apply open call which is now live for proposals.

Hypha Studios is a charity that opens up commercial and high street spaces across the UK for free cultural use. Since 2021 the charity have hosted over 110 exhibitions, awarded free exhibition and studio space to over 2,000 creatives, and welcomed over 36,000 members of the public to exhibitions and events.

These three galleries are in the heart of the City of London and will open to coincide with Frieze London week. The space is awarded to successful applicants for free, who in return organise and invigilate their exhibitions and organise public-facing events.

One gallery will be presented as a collaboration between Hypha Studios and art/architecture platform recessed.space. It will focus on exhibitions that speak to architecture, landscape, or the built environment issues, with propositions that respond to the unique architecture of No.1 Poultry, Postmodernism, or the City of London welcome.

recessed.space is an independent platform for new writing on art, architecture & the space between with over 280 articles covering the wide range of ways architecture and arts overlap. We are looking for such rich creative breadth in the programming of this gallery space.

You will need to apply as a group with a lead artist or curator.

The site will be awarded to you for free & in return you will organise some public-facing events alongside your exhibition—these could be workshops, talks or anything which supports your creative practices.

We will prioritise those that cannot afford exhibition or studio space & we are committed to supporting creatives & communities most in need.

The units will be presented to look more like conventional galleries, with walls painted white & window vinyl removed.

The space should be used a minimum of four days a week during your awarded period, with public opening hours to be agreed in advance.
