The case of Johan Creten’s works in his solo exhibition “Sunrise / Sunset” at the Perrotin Gallery in Paris is a classic case where the viewer can really get confused in an all-an interesting exhibition with emblematic and large-scale sculptures. This is because his new body of works mingle with the older one, which seem to have no affinity or similarity to each other, his ceramic colorful wall-sculptures or the sculptures, compared to the all-black voluminous sculptures of birds or animals occupying the space, are creating only queries and questions that puzzle the thinking of the viewer. This is because there is no dialogue them, between the new and old, but a simple confrontation between ideas and materials with a common axis sculpture and large sizes, but this is not enough to clarify further the landscape regarding the concept of the artist and the exhibition. Contrary at the large and clean walls of the gallery, which is housed in an amazing classic French building, it would be more crucial if one of the two series of artworks were on show, so that the viewer could feel the security of the communication and the understanding of the artwork, and at the same time, it would be evident the consistent and the dialogue between the artwork with the architecture and the space.-Efi Michalarou
