OPEN CALL:Fellowships For Photography & Humanities Research

fellow2_largeThe Harry Ransom Center, a humanities research library and museum at The University of Texas at Austin, invites applications for its research fellowships. For its 2018-19 fellowship program, the Ransom Center will award ten dissertation fellowships and up to 50 post-doctoral fellowships for projects that require substantial on-site use of its collections. The fellowships support research in all areas of the humanities, including photography.

The Center’s photography collection was founded on the renowned Gernsheim collection of historical photographs, and has grown to include over five million negatives and prints. It includes holdings of such 20th century photographers as Edward Steichen, Man Ray, Walker Evans, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Betty Hahn, and Robert Heinecken, as well as contemporary photographers LaToya Ruby Frazier, Penelope Umbrico, Marco Breuer, and Louie Palu, among many others. The Ransom Center also houses the Magnum Photos collection as well as the archives of Elliott Erwitt, David Douglas Duncan, Arnold Newman, Anne Noggle, and others.

The Marlene Nathan Meyerson Photography Fellowship Endowment, David Douglas Duncan Endowment for Photojournalism, and Arnold Newman Fellowship in Photography provide support for projects that engage the Center’s photography collection.

The fellowships range from one to three months, with stipends of 3,500 USD per month (domestic) or 4,000 USD per month (international). Travel stipends and dissertation fellowships provide stipends of 2,000 USD (domestic) or 2,500 USD (international). Fellowship residencies may be scheduled between June 1, 2018, and August 31, 2019. During the fellowship, scholars will work on-site at the Ransom Center in Austin, Texas.

Application deadline: 15/11/17, 5pm
