ART FAIRS:LISTE-Art Fair Basel 2016

Alex Rathbone, Down, installation view, The Sunday Painter GalleryLISTE was originally founded in 1996 as “LISTE-The Young Art Fair in Basel”. From the beginning LISTE has focused on introducing new galleries representing young, emerging artists to an established art scene.  The intentionally low number of galleries and the strict selection policy of the jury (composed of museum professionals) contribute to a feeling of vitality and dynamism at the Fair.

For its 21st edition LISTE continuing to pursue its consistent application policy, the jury has once again selected the 79 most promising galleries from 34 countries, 11 of which are participating for the first time at LISTE. The past 20 years have seen many (then unknown) artists make their debut at LISTE, including: Wilhelm Sasnal, Jim Lambie, Elizabeth Peyton or Francesco Vezzoli. The same success applies to galleries as well, unknown at the time but now among the most established. If we look at the prominent galleries in the art world today, many of them include the 300 once unknown or virtually unknown galleries that have taken part in LISTE over the past 20 years. The widely acclaimed Performance Project will take place for the 12th time, curated by Eva Birkenstock (Kunsthaus Bregenz). Titled “Trans-Corporeal Metabolisms”, focuses on works that consider the body as a porous and permeable interface. Participating artists: Alexandra Bachzetsis , Keren Cytter, Alicia Frankovich, Keyon Gaskin, Dorota Gawęda & Eglė Kulbokaitė and Hayley Silverman. The Helvetia Art Prize, is directed towards young artists at the beginning of their careers. The Prize comes with prize money of CHF 15,000 and an exhibition at LISTE. The winner of the Helvetia Art Prize 2016 is STELLA. She finds her subjects in the everyday world of consumerism, In her award-winning installation “American Dream”, the young artist presents the dream factories of Hollywood and Las Vegas as large-scale silk paintings and as surfaces onto which to project her dreams and aspirations. In front of these, she places home-made lamps decorated with emblems from everyday American culture. Her work skilfully walks a fine line between childish playfulness and strategic subversion. Special Gests Programme: , Kaskadenkondensator trusts in the local and cooperates with the young artist curators Dr. Kuckucks Labrador. They will invent a shop- and exhibition display. As special guest of the LISTE Art Fair, the HeK (House of Electronic Arts Basel) has invited the Swiss artist duo, Christoph Wachter & Mathias Jud to show their work. The two artists explore the ways the digital medium of communication register as personal outlet and influence our perceptions. Also for this year, Kunsthalle Zürich will present “RATZ FATZ ZAUBER WAS: Fairs and Fairy Tales”, a project by Luca Beeler, Cédric Eisenring, and Carmen Tobler.
