OPEN CALL:2024 Emerging Architect Fellowship with Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design
The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto invites applications for a two-year Emerging Architect Fellowship Award in areas of architectural research and design, with a particular focus on topics that address issues of climate and the built environment. This Fellowship Award will be a non-tenure appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2024, or shortly thereafter, and end on June 30, 2026.

This biannual position offers early-career architects the resources to develop focused research and an opportunity to teach in a supportive faculty. This fellowship is not a post-doctoral position or meant to support dissertation completion, though we do welcome applications from recent doctoral graduates invested in design studio instruction. The successful candidate is expected to be in residence in the Greater Toronto Area during the term of the appointment.
In addition to their research, the successful applicant will be engaged in a two-year in-residence fellowship teaching in both the graduate and undergraduate Architecture programs. The fellow will teach three courses on an annual basis. The annual teaching load will include a graduate design studio with focus on the successful candidate’s research project. The fellowship project will be exhibited and disseminated by May 2026, including a public lecture at the Daniels Faculty.
Candidates must have earned a professionally accredited degree in architecture (Master of Architecture preferred). We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent creative practice and research at the highest international level.
Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in creative professional activity and/or research which can be demonstrated by publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals or websites; the submitted research statement; presentations at significant conferences; awards and accolades; and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
Candidates must demonstrate some teaching experience and the ability to contribute to the enrichment of undergraduate and graduate programs at the Daniels Faculty. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments and strong letters of reference.
The Emerging Architect Fellowship provides a salary as well as a budget for research materials.
