OPEN CALL:Professorship in Art Mediation at HBK Braunschweig

Außenaufnahme Geb1. und der Bibliothek

The Institute of Performative Practice, Art and Education at the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK Braunschweig) is currently seeking to fill the following professorship with the starting date April 1, 2025:

Professorship—Art Mediation: Salary Scale W2 NBesG
Application deadline:
January 28, 2024

The successful applicant will be appointed as a civil servant in accordance with German civil service regulations, if applicable, or otherwise as an employee. This is a permanent appointment.

We are seeking an artist of distinction and preeminence whose work demonstrates a clear position towards the area of art mediation.

At HBK Braunschweig, art mediation is offered as an additional qualification for students working towards a degree in the Fine Arts, and is taught in German. Students gain the ability and qualification to teach from an arts perspective. Those primarily working in Fine Art develop an awareness of artistic practice in dialogue with communities, a practice that contends with context-specific questions of political education and acts as a mediating element within the public sphere. Seminars, lectures, events and other teaching formats in art mediation also open up additional fields of activity for students of other degree courses (art pedagogy, art and media studies, design) at the HBK Braunschweig.

We are seeking a person who
–Will explore new pathways in art mediation within the framework of artistic practice and in their teaching and open these up for discussion with students (contact time: 18 semester weekly hours,”LVS”)
–Can demonstrate experience in curatorial or collaborative projects in institutional contexts and civil society
–Views the teaching of art as an element of artistic practice, demonstrating a teaching strategy that successfully integrates the theoretical foundation for such practice, and
–Is qualified and professionally experienced as a practitioner of art mediation at the intersection of art and art education, in contexts other than school teaching.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate the following experience and qualifications:
–A body of work that demonstrates a significant contribution to art mediation through a variety of artistic media and processes
–Active participation in the current art mediation discourse, especially in relation to socio-political questions
–Relevant, internationally visible exhibitions (whether solo or group), projects, catalogues, talks, symposia, prizes or similar
–Willingness to expand interdisciplinary collaborations within the IPKB and the HBK, and consolidate and grow HBK networks with regional and supra-regional art establishments and other educational institutions.

Candidates who can demonstrate the following qualifications are particularly encouraged to apply:
–A record of publications in a relevant field
–Experience in organising conferences in the area of art meditation

Eligibility for employment is conditional upon:
–University degree in Fine Art, Art Pedagogy or similar
–Proven teaching ability, demonstrated by usually several years of teaching art and artistic projects in educational contexts
–An especial aptitude for artistic work and additional artistic achievements
–Experience in planning, acquiring and delivering exhibition projects

As a requirement of the position, all candidates are expected to demonstrate social and leadership competencies and to promote equality and diversity, and to make a positive contribution to combating discrimination at the university. In particular, they are expected to participate in academic self-governance and to sit on relevant committees. All candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work with other departments across the university in order to promote an integrated approach to teaching and learning.

Proficiency in German to at least C1 level under the European Reference Framework, or willingness to acquire a knowledge of German to this level within two years of appointment is expected.
