MIRAGES LXX

On June the art spotlight is Basel that hosts the most important and remarkable Art Fairs for Contemporary Art. At one hand is the Art Basel in which participate older and most recognized galleries, but the most important art-event in our opinion is LISTE Art Fair, because its focus is to introduce new galleries that represent young, emerging artists to an established art scene.  The intentionally low number of galleries and the strict selection policy of the jury (composed of museum professionals) contribute to a feeling of vitality and dynamism at the Fair.

For our magazine is a great honor to be Online Media Partners on a Regular basis with LISTE Art Fair.

At Liste Art Fair Basel 2023 participate 88 galleries from 35 countries with works by over 100 artists. As of  last year, Liste belongs to the Stiftung zur Förderung aktueller Kunst Basel (Foundation for the Promotion of Contemporary Art Basel). This ensures that the Liste, as a non-profit organisation, can continue its commitment and dedication to contemporary art. For the 19th timeHelvetia Art Prize, which supports young artists at the beginning of their professional careers. This year the award winner is Jonas Van Holanda, who creates immersive installations that often combine vid-eos with his own texts as well as sculptural objects and sound. The Brazilian-born artist’s research-based practice moves between content conciseness and poetic narration. He deals in-depth with topics such as language, ecology and quantum physics, which he reworks and reinterprets through intimate fictional texts and ephemeral works. For example, in the spatial installation “Moving Towards Us” (2022), for which he received the Helvetia Art Prize 2022, Van Holanda reveals moments of transformation rooted in his own reality and identity as a trans artist. Exploring the physical and philosophical concept of negative entropy, he under-stands physicality as a sensory and temporal experience.

Liste Showtime Online, the digital edition of the fair, will run  from 12 – 25 June with preview days from 7 – 11 June, launching just before Liste Art Fair Basel. Liste Showtime is aimed at both visitors to Liste Art Fair Basel and those who cannot travel to Basel. Each of the 88 galleries participating in the physical fair will present one artist from their fair presentation. Among other things, there will be works to dis-cover that are not exhibited in Basel. With extensive information presented in the form of texts, videos and interviews, Liste Showtime not only provides a compre-hensive overview of the programme shown in Basel but also focuses on the possi-bilities of conveying artistic works in a digital space.

Liste Expedition Online is a year-round research forum and continuously growing index of artists who have exhibited at Liste Art Fair Basel and on Liste Showtime.  Liste Expedition Online was launched in December 2021 as a non-commercial, digital research forum that brings together the world’s newest and most important artistic positions. The forum’s artist index grows continuously year after year and is publicly accessible throughout the year, together with curated programmes. This year, Liste Expedition is collaborating with Topical Cream, a New York-based non-profit that supports the work of women and gender non-conforming individuals in contemporary art through public programming and digital publishing. For the project Writers’ Picks Topical Cream is inviting writers to contribute essays about and interviews with artists of their choice from the Liste Expedition universe.
