Having the northwestern part (Pyrgos, Panormos, Isternia, etc.) as a core of culture and tradition that dates back to ancient times, the island will be a major artistic center and place of origin of the major sculptors of the 19th century (Part I).

According to tradition, the best sculptor of antiquity, Phidias, came to Tinos and taught his art and its secrets. That is also indicated by the large amount of archeological findings. The local marble was also used for the construction of Poseidon’s and Amphitrite’s temple in Kionia. Furthermore, the quarries of the noted green marble in Tinos operated since ancient times, mostly during the Roman and the Early Christian eras. The biggest development of the marble Art, took place after the Greek revolution, in 1830, when Tinos evolved so much as to become the largest centr of marble carving in Greece. The Tinian marble sculptors made their island famous worldwide by winning a high reputation, the island is also well known for its sculptors and painters, such as Nikolaos Gysis, Yannoulis Chalepas and Nikiforos Lytras. 40 Greek and International artists meet at the Isternia Tinos ZIG ZAG/ Festival 2021, at the traditional village of Isternia in Tinos. The festival revisits Tinian history through Contemporary Art, with focus on connecting artists, local residents and the public and visitors of Tinos through a collaborative exhibition and event program. The exhibition “Living marble / Beseelter Marmor” is the art exhibition part of the festival and was designed for Isternia which together with the village of Pirgos, are the center of marble in Tinos. Artists and curators from Greece and abroad retrace their relationship with material and matter, in a rough yet unexpectedly hospitable natural landscape. The exhibition expands further than the exhibition space of the Old Medical Center of Isternia to create an unexpected art walk, in and around the Isternian pathways. The viewer has the unique opportunity to explore the art and the surroundings – the arches, lintels and the unique traditional architecture. “Living marble / Beseelter Marmor ” is the exhibition part of Isternia Tinos ZIG ZAG/ Festival 2021.
