Peter Köhler is very aware of the brutal yet comic nature of the world around us. He possesses a sense of the ironic that does not rely on pop cultural references but instead on timeless truths that have universal resonance. In his solo exhibition “Crepuscular Tales” that is on presentation at Galleri Magnus Karlsson in Stockholm. the artist shows a series of 36 drawings which are presented as an installation in the main room of the gallery. Peter Köhler’s paintings and drawings balance between abstraction and spontaneous figuration. The images are formed layer by layer, intuitive and directly but with accurateness and precision. With his playful and expressive painting he creates landscapes in an airy atmosphere, under water or perhaps on an unknown planet. Recently, Peter Köhler has gone from picturing everyday life to a refuge into a utopic dream world. In some of the work there is also a evident inspiration from Southeast Asia in form and symbolics. His new works on paper are amalgamations of three core elements. The first is a type of close observation that is somehow both tenacious and casual, taken and selected from, everything he happens to see. Then there is a level of imagination that is as familiar as it is wild, in the case of drawings like these that contain both intimacy and vastness. Finally, there is an indefatigable quality of technique in terms of color, line and form.
