ART-PRESENTATION:Entang Wiharso-Bernier/Eliades Gallery

Entang Wiharso belongs to the leading figures of Indonesian art scene. In 2013 represented his country in the Venice Biennale in the 55th Venice Biennial, Indonesian Pavillon in Venice and in the 6th Prague Biennale. He has been included in other Biennials and Museum exhibitions from Tokyo to Rome. In near mural-scale paintings and in sculptures cast in aluminum, brass and resin, he mixes traditional Indonesian styles with Pop and Surrealism, creating allegories of psychic stress in a global economy. Wiharso illustrates the situation of the people who coexist, but their communication is limited and indirect because often they are divided due to complex: political, racial and religious systems. At first glance, the artworks look very busy, but on closer examination, the viewer is drawn into a moving meditation on the human condition. These, the artist says, are meant to show how society, culture and politics are “tied in an intricate web”. They resemble webs into which are mixed human bodies, plants, languages, tails, intestines and detailed landscapes, while accompanied by politically charged texts. In his works, Wiharso explores Indonesian socio-political issues through an intimate examination of human relationships, traditions and psyche. The basic theme of his works examines how the world, which is dominated by systemic conditions, suppresses our individual and internal dreams and desires.
