PRESENTATION: Hervé Di Rosa-Mirages Du Monde

Hervé Di Rosa is known for his colorful, playful, and imaginative works. As a founder of the Figuration Libre movement, he combines elements of comics, folk art, and popular culture in his paintings and sculptures. Di Rosa has collaborated with artisans worldwide, celebrating diverse artistic traditions. Herve Di Rosa was one of the founding members of the French art movement Figuration Libre. This movement exploded onto the art scene in France, in the early 1980’s.  At the same time, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf were starting their careers in the United States, and from the very beginning the two groups formed a strong comradery, exhibiting together both in Europe and the US. More than any other artist from the above mentioned group, Di Rosa’s influence on an international scale has been prolific. He has lived and worked in many countries and exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. Probably his most sought after works are the paintings from the 1980’s during the time when the Figuration Libre movement and their American counter parts were at the peak of their fame, shocking the art world.

Designed as a journey in three chapters, the exhibition “Mirages Du Monde” traces more than forty years of artistic creation, from the 1980s to the artist’s most recent works, including the series inspired by his travels around the world. It highlights the richness of an artistic universe in constant expansion, shaped by diverse influences and a distinctive perspective on visual cultures.

The Emergence of a Visual Language:  The ground floor of the art center immerses visitors in the creative energy of the 1980s, a formative period during which Hervé Di Rosa developed a visual language that is instantly recognizable. Hybrid figures, exuberant storytelling, dynamic graphic expression, and a vibrant palette define paintings that broke away from the dominant artistic conventions of the time and asserted a boldly independent voice. Drawing on popular culture, comics, vernacular imagery, and the so-called “minor arts,” his work helped redefine artistic hierarchies and broaden the scope of contemporary painting.

Journeys and Dialogues: The second chapter, on the first floor, focuses on the artist’s extensive travels, a central element of his practice, through his :Around the World” project, which comprises nineteen stages. From Africa to Asia, and from Europe to the United States, Hervé Di Rosa has developed site-specific projects in collaboration with local artisans and workshops. Incorporating regional techniques, materials, and craftsmanship, he creates hybrid works that stand at the intersection of artistic traditions. The groups of works presented here—particularly those created in Ghana, Vietnam, Mexico, Seville, Israel, Miami, and Paris—reflect a rich dialogue between cultures, where painting becomes a space for exchange, circulation, and the reinvention of forms.

New Horizons: The final floor brings together a selection of recent works that both extend and renew the artist’s ongoing investigations. Here, Hervé Di Rosa explores new narrative and pictorial forms while continuing his exploration of global imaginaries and cultural exchanges. Balancing continuity with transformation, these paintings reveal an oeuvre in constant evolution—one that traverses multiple worlds, both real and imagined, and remains driven by an enduring curiosity for the forms, stories, and visual languages of the world.
